MIRAMAR, Fla. (WSVN) — Several volunteers helped renovate the home of a South Florida veteran who served in Iraq.

A community came together to help Marine Lance Corporal Martin Escoto.

Escoto served two tours of duty in Iraq and was wounded by friendly fire in 2006. He was then medically discharged. “This young man, in the service of his country, was injured,” said iReachAmerica CEO Peter Caspari, “took a bullet in his abdomen. He was awarded the purple heart and came back, and in the process of coming back, he needed some help.”

Escoto’s family’s home went into foreclosure in 2010. They moved into an older house that needed lots of repairs, and now they are getting a generous gesture. “I know that he knows that there was a point where he wasn’t supposed to come back. There was a point where we weren’t gonna see him again,” said sister Linda Escoto, “and the fact that he’s here now, and we can see him smile and laugh and play with him to enjoy things like this. He enjoys the simple things.”

Volunteers from Miami-Dade and Broward organizations helped renovate part of his house and make over his rooms. “Furniture was donated for the living room and two bedrooms in his house,” said volunteer Janette Chandler.

The war veteran’s family calling this a truly moving day. “Coming to this country and everything, we’ve never had a real house, so just getting the house we were really ecstatic and knowing that we were gonna make it look like a house, like a normal family, like the American dream, to be able to achieve that was just amazing,” said Linda.

A new beginning for which Escoto is grateful. Escoto said he wants to pay it forward, saying he plans to donate to other veterans.
