Porsche Hybrid Race Car Makes U.S. Debut At Road Atlanta

Sports car maker Porsche released a video today showing how its GT3 hybrid race car performed in Saturday’s Petit Le Mans, a 1,000-mile endurance race at the Road Atlanta race course in Braselton, Ga.

The footage is interesting in part because it shows how punishing such long races are to the cars and how the simplest problems can hold a team back. The GT3, which showed good speed, got two flat tires in the first hour and wound up finishing 18th overall. Still, the car helps make the point that hybrid technology is probably here to stay in motorsport, as is so-called alternative power in general. After all, first and second place in the race went to a pair of diesel-powered Peugeot 908 HDis.
